External internships are training activities whose main objective is to supplement and apply, in a professional setting, the skills and knowledge acquired in the field of International Relations.

For academic purposes, internships can take two forms:

  • Curricular internships, which are academic activities that form part of the compulsory curriculum.
This is a 6 ECTS course taught in the second semester of the fourth year. Only students who have passed a minimum of 150 ECTS in this degree programme may enrol in this course.
  • Extracurricular internships, which, although they have the same objectives as curricular internships, are not included in the curriculum and are completely voluntary.
These placements may be recognised as curricular placements provided that 1) the number of hours is at least 150, 2) the acquisition of skills associated with the subject is accredited, 3) a minimum of 150 ECTS credits have been passed in the degree, and 4) the other requirements for curricular placements are met.

It is also possible to undertake external placements abroad, either within the framework of the Erasmus programme or through an educational collaboration agreement with a foreign institution. The processing of these placements depends on the International Relations Office (ORI).

Management of external internships

Internships can be carried out in companies, institutions or organisations, whether public or private, with which the University of Vigo has signed a valid educational cooperation agreement. See the list of agreements.

Students can promote the signing of an agreement with a company, institution or organisation of interest to them through the University of Vigo Foundation (FUVI). Check the procedures.

The offer of curricular internships aimed at those enrolled in the compulsory subject of External Internships is made at the beginning of the second semester.

Whether curricular or extracurricular, before beginning an internship, it is mandatory to sign 1) a document formalising the internship signed by the entity where the internship is carried out and the interested party; and 2) register the interested party with social security.

For the internship to take place, an internal academic tutor must be appointed, as well as an internship tutor at the place where the internship is carried out. At the end of the internship, three documents must be issued: one for each of the tutors, plus an internship report prepared by the interested party.
